Iron deficiency anemia is a condition that occurs due to low levels of iron in the body and leads to a decrease in the production of red blood cells that carry oxygen to body tissues. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath. It is usually caused by poor diet, blood loss or inability to absorb iron. Treatment usually includes iron supplementation and dietary changes to increase iron intake. If left untreated, iron deficiency anemia can lead to complications such as heart problems and impaired cognitive function.
